CertiPath Solutions Guide Executive Summary
Identity and Access Management (I&AM)
are significant challenges facing medium to large size organizations.
These challenges are further complicated in a multi-enterprise
environment where external parties are relying on computer based
identities for enabling supply chain or extranet applications.
Regulatory drivers addressing this space are and a series of
increasingly stringent access requirements coming from the Defense
Agencies at Governments worldwide. In the US, the government wide
regulation HSPD-12 has played a major role in promoting high assurance
identities.
One of the most important foundational
pieces to any I&AM strategy is to establish a Public Key Infrastructure
(PKI). In smaller organizations, this may be best accomplished through
working with a managed service provider but for medium to large
organizations, owning the Certificate Authority (CA) is almost always
both economically and strategically advantageous.
The choice of the architecture will
depend on a number of factors such as differing Certificate Policies (CPs),
organizational structure and ownership, differing assurance levels,
regulatory requirements and organization specific trust relationships.
The Solution Guide covers the options and section criteria that can
dictate the choice of PKI architecture.
In order for an enterprise to extend
its I&AM infrastructure to the broader community of partners, customers
and suppliers, it is imperative to work with a community trust fabric,
such as CertiPath. The Solutions Guide provides a roadmap of how to
participate in such a trust fabric and architecture decision one needs
to make to implement a complete I&AM solution for use internally as well
as with external vendor, customers and partners.
